You must have heard a lot of parents saying(complaining) that their children always stay busy in social media, they waste their valuable time in that, it affects their study and blah blah blah...
In this post, I'm going to talk about how social media has changed our lives and you'll be able to answer whether it's a waste of time or not.
So what is "SOCIAL MEDIA"?
It includes a number of websites and apps that let users create or share content.
Yes, it includes apps you use like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, etc.
Contribution of social media
In the last 12-15 years, especially after the arrival of Facebook, it has changed our lives drastically.
- Do you see how easy it has become to stay connected to our old and distant friends! (Facebook)
- How easy it has become to message anyone at the other end of the world! (WhatsApp)
- How easy it has become to share your photos with the world! (Instagram)
- How easy it has become to show the world that what are you doing! (Snapchat)
- How easy it has become to share your opinions on major events! (Twitter)
- How easy it has become to share/gain knowledge! (Quora, Reddit)
- How easy it has become to share your stories with everyone! (Blogger, Wordpress, Medium)
- How easy it has become to attend meetings sitting at your home and video calling? (Skype)
- How easy it has become to watch any video, be it educational, movie song, TV show, entertainment, news! (YouTube, Jio TV, Hotstar)
Apart from this, it has changed several other things which we couldn't imagine 15-20 years ago...
- Could you imagine that you could order food sitting at home and get a discount for that! Thus, you save your time and money and get your food home delivered. (Zomato, Swiggy, Uber eats) (People could order food on the telephone in the past but there weren't any discounts and delivery charge was another problem.)
- Could you imagine that you could book a taxi according to your time schedule? (Ola, Uber)
- Could you imagine that you could do the marketing of your products to millions of people and that too for free? (Marketing on various social media pages created by respective company)
- Could you imagine that you could build your network with professionals which will help you find the job? (LinkedIn)
- Could you imagine that you would be able to show/teach your talent to millions of other people? (Tiktok, YouTube)
- Could someone with mediocre writing skills think that he/she could write something he/she loved and get paid for it? (Blogging)
So you see, Social media has changed our lives unimaginably and that too, for better!
Today as a result of the social media revolution,
- Almost all know what is happening all over the world.
- You know that what are your friends up to.
- Almost all of us have opinions about everything.
Social media has made it easy for us to save our time, energy, socializing, know everything around us.
Social media has given an opportunity to every common guy to become "Overnight sensation" through its wide reach. (Do I need to give examples? They are all around you.)
Downsides of Social media
Every coin has two sides. Likewise, social media has its disadvantages, too.
- Students waste their valuable time on social media, scrolling through feeds seeing "what are their friends up to" and surfing mindless things. They can use social media for their benefits if they use it wisely. For example, there are countless channels on YouTube that have informative videos related to your field, your interests, new languages, calligraphy, and the list goes on. If students will watch these videos, they will learn something and add value to their life.
- You see that it has become much easier to become popular nowadays. But it is a two-way sword. If you misuse social media, you can also become a target of people who want to mock you aka trollers. (Memes)
- Another downside is people separating from each other. Though social media has made the world small, it has increased the distance between people. If you see people around you, you will see that most of them will be staring at their mobile screens, they would barely care that what's happening around them. People have 5000 friends on Facebook but they barely have 5 friends in real life upon whom they can count on.
We know which event has taken place in the other country but we don't know what are our neighbors up to.
In the end, I'll say that social media is quite awesome if you want to use it for your growth but it's totally a waste of time if you use it to scroll through the feed, do mindless surfing, trolling.
There is no point in blaming social media for the current situation. It's up to you how you use it.
